Asian & World Social Forums

Taking Pakistan's most marginalised voices to the global stage.

ASR’s participation in the Asian and World Social Forums was guided by a clear principle — those most excluded should be the ones speaking for themselves, not having others speak on their behalf.

Asian Social Forum — January 2003, India

Seven of ASR’s team members visited India to attend the Asian Social Forum in January 2003. By interacting with people from all over Asia, they established new contacts and networks across the region. They attended various seminars, conferences, meetings and dialogues. The nature of this activity included building public opinion and sensitising people on issues related to class, identity, women and people-based development.

World Social Forum — 2004, India

ASR held seminars at the World Social Forum on the peace process, seeing it as the best platform from which to raise a unified voice against globalisation and the rising threat of imperialism. ASR registered itself as coordinating the “Process to the WSF and Beyond, Pakistan and Beyond” — encouraging those who could best represent Pakistan to attend and speak for themselves.

This was important not only to enhance the self-confidence of activists but also to broaden the base of social activism — going outside the norm of having others speak on behalf of those who actually should be speaking.
